Coil Packing Terms Explained: A Buyer\'s Glossary
A glossary of coil packing, wrapping, strapping and stacking terms — machine vs. line, ring vs. C-ring, eye-through wrapping, overlap, VCI, FAT/SAT, and recipe — defined so buyers and suppliers mean the same thing.
Glossary: Coil Packing, Wrapping, Strapping and Stacking Terms
Glossary: Coil Packing, Wrapping, Strapping and Stacking Terms
A shared vocabulary prevents the most expensive mistake in a coil packing project: buying the wrong scope because the buyer and supplier used the same word for different things. This glossary defines the terms used when discussing an automatic coil packing line.
System and Machine Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Coil wrapping machine | A machine that applies protective material around a coil. It performs the wrapping action but does not necessarily include handling, strapping, weighing, labeling, or stacking. |
| Coil packing machine | A broad term that may mean a single wrapper or a complete packaging system. Confirm the scope before comparing quotations. |
| Coil packing line | An integrated system that connects handling, wrapping, strapping, weighing, labeling, and stacking into one controlled flow. |
| Coil strapping machine | A machine that applies steel or PET strapping around the coil or bundle to hold the package together. |

Wrapping Mechanisms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Eye-through wrapping | Wrapping in which the material passes through the coil eye to cover the inner bore and full cross-section. |
| Orbital wrapper | A wrapper that rotates around the product; may also be called a horizontal or ring wrapper. |
| Ring wrapper | A wrapper with a closed ring that rotates around the coil. |
| C-ring wrapper | A wrapper with an opening in the ring, allowing side loading or access without a closed loop. |
Orientation and Material Flow
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Coil orientation | The direction of the coil eye relative to the floor: eye to sky (vertical) or eye to wall (horizontal). |
| Down-ender / upender | Equipment that changes the coil orientation, usually between vertical and horizontal. |
| Turnstile | A rotating storage device that holds coils so they can be separated and fed one by one. |
| Buffer | Storage positions between stations that absorb differences in release and cycle time. |

Wrapping Materials and Coverage
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Overlap | The portion of the film width that covers the previous layer, usually expressed as a percentage. |
| VCI | Volatile corrosion inhibitor, a material that releases a protective vapor to reduce corrosion risk. |
| Stretch film / LLDPE | Elastic plastic film used to wrap and secure coils. |
The image shows a steel coil packaging line with an operator at the equipment. Overlap and material terms define what the applied film must do for the coil surface, route, and storage time.
Acceptance and Control Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| FAT | Factory acceptance test: verification of the equipment at the supplier's facility. |
| SAT | Site acceptance test: verification of the equipment after installation at the buyer's site. |
| LOTO | Lockout-tagout: a procedure to isolate energy sources before maintenance or manual intervention. |
| Recipe | The recorded set of machine parameters, materials, and inspection steps for one packaging outcome. |

A Practical Next Step
Use this glossary when writing your RFQ so every supplier answers the same scope. If a term is ambiguous, define it in the project document, and keep the same definitions when you review responses for the automatic coil packing line.
